This assignment begun with two mere words, up and down. Naturally, I was forced to make connections, figure out what those two words truly meant to me. I looked inwards and went back to my roots, my country and its language. It was there that I found meaning and became fascinated by things that had never really interested me before.
Up and down. Down or in Greek, κάτω (/ká.to:/ → /’ka.to/ → /’ka.to/). Kátō. Downwards. Beneath, below. In or to the underground. Underworld. Underworld or in Greek, Kato kosmos. Kátō kósmos.
Kato kosmos, or the underworld; one of the three realms that constitute the cosmos, the place where the souls of the dead were believed to reside, the “unseen place”. In Greek mythology, the underworld held great importance. Greeks believed in the continuation of human existence, even after death. Kato kosmos was believed to be a place of mystery and absolute darkness, a direct contrast to the land of the living.
This book is my interpretation of the underworld.
